Our desire for and strong attraction to beautiful buttocks has been a strongly ingrained human trait which long predates written history and is as old as human existence. All world cultures, from the prehistoric cave men, for who the female buttock was the primary sexual attractor, to our present day, have idolized and portrayed the human buttocks in thousands of sculptures and paintings.
Multiple studies have repeatedly shown that all humans, irrespective of their age and ethnicity, perceive certain body proportions as attractive. In the face, it is the “Divine Proportion” of 1.618 while with the female figure it is a WHR (waist-to-hip ratio) of 0.7. According to evolutionary psychologists, beauty was never really left to the variability of the “eyes of the beholder”. Instead, to ensure that our ancestors, us and our progeny choose the healthiest mates and ensure the survival of our species, our brains were genetically hard-wired to subconsciously be attracted to certain body proportions which are associated with good health and fertility.(For an interesting review, please, see our BEAUTY page )

Thousands of years ago before 1976 and K.C. and the Sunshine Band's Shake Your Booty, the Commodores’ 1977 hit Brickhouse (“She's a Brick-house, She's mighty mighty, Just lettin' it all hang out. Yea she's a brick house, That lady's stacked, And that's a fact, Ain't holdin' nothin back …”) and well before the arrival of J-Lo’s famous rear, Beyoncé Knowles’ Bootylicious and Sir Mix-a-Lot's 1992 Emmy award winning ode to the buttocks, Baby Got Back (“I like big butts and I can not lie, You other brothers can't deny, That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist, And a round thing in your face, You get sprung,…”), the ancient Greeks already predated and matched our present day preoccupation with the rear.
In addition to their many beautiful works of art depicting the buttocks, the Greeks had coined multiple descriptive terms for the buttocks (in Greek - pygē πυγή pi-upsilon-gamma-eta). These include: callipygy, callipygian – Having "beautiful" or sexy buttocks, callimammapygian - Having beautiful breasts and buttocks, quatopygia - enticing movement of one's rear end, planopygian - Having flat buttocks, pygophily - Men who have a special attraction for female buttocks and pygoscopia - The

| observance of someone's backside or, especially, the buttocks. This was taken to an extreme in ancient Syracuse, where a religious cult of buttock worship even built a temple for and worshipped Aphrodite Kallipygos (or Aprodite of the Beautiful Buttocks). The fascination with and the influence of buttocks does not end there. According to some scholars, just as our Halloween has been the product of the merger of a much earlier Celtic holiday with All Saints’ Day, so has Valentine’s Day originated in a much earlier holiday. They feel that Valentine’s Day is derived from the Roman Lupercalia, a love and fertility celebration

which to honor honoring Juno Februata, the goddess of the "fever” of love, was held in February. Moreover, they also claim that the symbol of Valentine’s Day and a universal symbol of love, the red heart with a vertical cleft, is actually a sanitized version of a more earthy and universal symbol of love; The idealized rear view of a woman’s buttocks when she bends over. (? Source of the expression “falling head over heels in love”) Our present glorification and worship of the female rear has reached an all time universal pinnacle. There is no denying that our current global popular culture is preoccupied with buttocks. The competition is the fiercest in the music business

Admiration of an attractive woman’s behind knows no borders. By all accounts, the glamorous April 29, 2011 wedding of Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton produced many stars. The new royal couple, hereto to be known as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, dress designer Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, but many agree the show was stolen by the maid of honor, Philippa “Pippa” Middleton. The world press went on a feeding frenzy reporting on Miss Middleton shapely derriere using terms such as “Fabularse”, “Asstocracy”. At least one Brit would have been better served not to tell his wife of his admiration of Pippa’s rear. His wife made her feelings known on his car (see blue car on right).

What Makes Buttocks TRULY Beautiful and Sexy?
|
We all know what we like and do not like in female buttocks. But, while ethnic considerations may diverge slightly, our tastes are universally united by several consistent features that make buttocks attractive to all of us. These are, beginning high and moving lower: 1. Increased forward curvature of the lower back - Normally, the low back has a curvature (lordosis). In sexier buttocks, women demonstrate a more pronounced lumbar lordosis (hyperlordosis) just above the buttocks. In these women, instead of their lower back spines joining the buttocks in a straight, vertical fashion, the low lumbar area of the spine have an accentuated forward curvature which elevates the sacrum making it more horizontal by 5-7 degrees. This results in an impression of both elevated and larger buttocks. 2. Clear separation of the buttocks both superiorly and inferiorly. The buttocks should appear to stand alone rather than merging indistinctly into the lower back and thighs. 3. Sacral (Venus or Butt) Dimples. The supragluteal fossae, the paired lateral lumbar indentations forming the highest side points of the sacral, V-shaped back triangle are seen in most women. These indentations are located superficial to the posterior superior iliac spine and the sacroiliac joints (the junction where the iliac bones of the pelvis join the sacrum).
| |
|
4. Sacral Triangle (in red on Left) - This inter-cheek V-shaped depression (Sacral Triangle) provides a well-defined origin and contrast for the curves of the adjacent buttock hemispheres. The triangle boundary lines are formed by the well-defined insertions of the gluteus maximus muscles into the lumbodorsal aponeurosis.
5. The sacral Triangle is the lower half of the Rhombus (Diamond) of Michaelis (in Yellow on Left). This kite, diamond or rhombus-shaped concave area, which was portrayed by artists for centuries, was formally described by the 19th Century German Gynecologist, Gustav Adolf Michaelis (1798-1848) as an indicator of pelvis width. The area of the rhombus is delineated by 4 summits; At the top, the third or fourth lumbar vertebra, along its sides, the Sacral Dimples and inferiorly, the junction of the sacrum and tail bone as well as the beginning of the vertical intergluteal buttock crease. A well-defined Rhombus of Michaelis separates the back and buttocks and thereby imparts definition and beauty to the female buttocks. In the recent decade, in a subconscious effort to create more definition and emphasize the rhombus, we have seen a surge of lower back tattoos placed on this area
|
6. Rounded, firm buttocks – The most attractive buttocks are well-defined hemispheres or spherical caps, whose maximal projection is centered about the upper or middle segments of the buttock. The buttocks are formed by the gluteal muscles (gluteus maximus and medius) superimposed by a layer of fat. The volume of the buttocks can be increased by enlarging the gluteal muscles with serious exercise, by placing gluteal implants or by increasing the fat volume with fat transfer. Please, note on the right how the forward sweep (hyperlordosis) of the lower back accentuating the buttocks, the well-defined sacral triangle and the roundness of the buttock spherical caps – all combine to create a sexy butt. 7. The under-buttock crease (i.e. infragluteal crease) should be minimal without drooping of the buttock over it.

Ethnic Differences – In our open culture, with its global cross influences by artists and athletes from diverse ethnic backgrounds and countries, there has been an ongoing erosion of formerly strict ethnic differences in tastes and ideals regarding fashion and appearance. However, in some cases, several ethnic generalities regarding preferred ideal buttock appearance may still hold. While Latin patients may prefer round buttocks with side fullness, some Caucasians and Asians prefer a more understated, shapely but less round/full look with a lateral flatness or even dimpling. On the other hand, when compared to Latin women, some African-American women may want the fullest look possible, including extreme lateral buttock fullness. This of course is very individual and in consulting with Dr. Aldea or Dr. Eby we would like to know how we can best serve your cosmetic goals.
Now that you know the components of the IDEAL beautiful buttocks, we can turn out attention to your particular situation. With the above in mind, how do you think does YOUR rear fall short of the ideal?
How could any of this help YOU?
Simple. Liposuction can nicely narrow your waist and reduce your WHR (waist to hip ratio)closer to or, under 70% of your hips. (Please, see our BEAUTY page). Liposuction of the back and waist will uncover and better define your sacral triangle and Rhombus of Michaelis (items 4 and 5 above), thereby, greatly enhancing the appearance of your rear and making your buttocks look larger. Liposuction of this area is termed BACK SCOOP SURGERY and will GREATLY improve and define the appearance of your buttock. If needed, your buttocks can also be volumetrically enlarged further by transferring some of your own fat into them from other parts of your body (i.e. a Brazillian Butt Lift, see below for details). This would greatly enhance both the volume and hemispherical appearance (item 6) of the buttocks resulting in more youthful, attractive, perky buttocks and a more sensual body profile with a huge boost in self-confidence.
Who may benefit from a Brazilian Butt Lift? Practically, everyone. Although the operation can transform a pretty butt into a much prettier rear, it may greatly improve many buttock deformities. Obesity (with, or without weight loss), aging, prolonged sun exposure and others – ALL cause deteriorations in buttock appearance. The results may be various combinations of either irregularly shaped asymmetric large or flat buttocks. Unfortunately, many of us, of all ages, have flat, deflated, undefined, deficient or unattractive buttocks due to either congenital or acquired processes. The Brazilian Butt Lift Buttock Augmentation is great for people who lost weight and suffered buttock deflation, for those whose buttocks do not have an ideal shape as well as those who wish fuller and firmer buttocks but have been unable to obtain them by exercise alone. However, it is contraindicated in people with unrealistic expectations, those with significant medical problems or people with excess lower back skin and severe buttock sagging. The latter group would be better served with excision of the excess skin and a formal buttock lift. The Brazilian Butt Lift Buttock Augmentation is now the fastest growing procedure in popularity.

Consultation - During a Brazilian Butt Lift plastic surgery consultation, Dr. Aldea will discuss your goals for treatment and review your medical history to determine if there are any factors that would preclude you from undergoing the butt lift surgery. The best candidates for Brazilian Butt Lift are men or women with realistic expectations who are in relatively good health who are not too thin and wish their lower backs and buttocks improved. If buttocks are to be augmented with a fat transfer, you must have a ready source of fat elsewhere in the body we can borrow from. If you are too thin and wish to have the Brazilian Butt Lift, you may need to gain 10-15 pounds to produce enough fat for transfer before this operation is seriously considered. The procedure starts with meticulous pre-operative planning. The current appearance of the buttocks and lower back are analyzed and areas of needed improvement are noted and discussed with you. The volumes of fat required for transfer and grafting are estimated. Then, the rest of the body is analyzed to see which areas of the body (tummy, flanks, outer thighs etc) could be liposuctioned to yield this fat. Although each case is different, at least 400cc of fat are needed for each buttock. This translates to your having to have and for us being able to remove at least 1,000 cc (or 2.2 pounds of fat) for buttock grafting. For your comfort and safety, most Plastic surgeons prefer to do this operation under general anesthesia, so you'll sleep comfortably through the operation. In surgery, the fat to be grafted is vacuumed gently to reduce damage to its cells. The fat is then gently purified to remove any debris and fat cells which were damaged. Only the best donor fat cells are then loaded into multiple syringes and kept cool (to slow its metabolism and increase its longevity). Using a few tiny needle holes, the fat is then injected into the buttocks in multiple small tunnels
| |
at various depths so that each fat cell will have a better blood flow to it and increase its survival and persistence. As the fat is grafted, the buttocks are carefully observed and checked throughout both for symmetry and correction of goals. The Brazilian Butt Lift Butt Augmentation and Lift is slow and painstaking procedure which is focused on proper retrieval and transfer of fat grafts. Because it lasts 4-8 hours many surgeons prefer not to do it. It would be fair to say if you hear of somebody doing a fat grafting Butt Augmentation-Brazilian Butt Lift in less than four hours chances are the grafts may not last.

Benefits of the Brazilian Butt Lift Buttock Augmentation – The results often feel and look much more natural than any implant currently on the market. The procedure is much more versatile, accurate and customized to your OWN buttocks results in much more natural results. The Brazilian Butt Lift Buttock Augmentation is associated with less scarring and with faster healing. Use of fat from other areas of your body means that those other areas will also be improved as well. Although not all of the grafted fat survives, the fat that does take will last for years. As a matter of fact, if you go on to lose weight, the weight loss would be from the entire body and the buttock will remain proportionate. Because of the superficial location of the nerves to the leg in the lower buttock, buttock implants cannot be safely placed in this area. But, this area is easily and safely filled with fat grafting. Buttock fat grafting is a safe way to ensure long-term volume addition to the buttocks. Unlike buttock implants or synthetic buttock fillers, since the fat is natural and comes from your own body, there are no risks of allergic reactions or other potential implant related complications (chronic fluid collections, implant infection, migration, nerve compression, capsular contracture, extrusion or even exposure). Furthermore, while buttock implants may have onset of complications later in life this is unheard of with fat grafting. Temporary pain is easily relieved with pain pills. You should expect some swelling, soreness, and temporary skin numbness for several weeks. Other potential complications may include some unevenness, asymmetry and some fat graft re-absorption (up to 20-30% of the grafted fat does not take and is absorbed, the fat that does survive at 3 months may last from years to a lifetime). Major complications are rare and may include bleeding, blood clots, infection, and poor healing.
Recovery - If you live out of town, we would ask that you stay in the Memphis area for 10-14 days after your surgery during which time we could follow your progress. There will be some swelling for 6-8 weeks, but you should be able to resume your normal activities 4 weeks after the procedure. For 4-6 weeks after surgery you will need to wear a surgical compression garment which will help contour your figure, stabilize the fat grafts and reduce swelling, thereby, improving tissue circulation and nutrition. The fat grafts should be regarded as freshly planted seedlings. You must allow them to establish a stable blood supply. Any undue pressure and shearing forces on the fat grafts may disrupt this important process. Therefore, you will need to sleep on your stomach and except for bathroom activities, you will need to avoid sitting on the grafted buttock areas for 2 weeks after surgery. After that until 6 weeks after the procedure, you may slowly resume sitting for necessary activities, but use a pillow and keep the sitting to a minimum.
On the average, depending on the nature of your occupation, you may be back to work: average 2 - 4 weeks. More strenuous activity (including gym): average 4 - 6 weeks or more.

Cost - our fees are extremely competitive, not only within our own metropolitan Memphis area, but ESPECIALLY in comparison with fees charged by plastic surgeons elsewhere in the United States. Since patients differ significantly in size and have different cosmetic goals, the duration and extent of their individual procedure(s) must differ as well, resulting in correspondingly different costs. The cost of your Brazilian Butt Lift Buttock Augmentation would depend on the estimated extent and duration of the procedure in YOUR particular case. Read more about it on our Fees and Costs page (Click http://www.cosmeticsurgeryspecialists.org/feesandcosts.html).
