Electronic mail is NOT confidential. The public internet uses broadcast technology. An E-mail message is divided into packets of information which travel through multiple servers at multiple institutions in completely unpredictable ways along different paths before reaching your computer. Anywhere along these paths, someone can capture any or all of the message, read it and disclose it to others.
