Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

| Sagging, wrinkled or baggy eyelids are surgically corrected with incisions in the natural crease lines of the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes - features that make you look older and more tired than you feel. The goal of blepharoplasty is to produce a more youthful and rested appearance of the eyes with restoration of a visible upper lid crease. While Blepharoplasty can add an upper eyelid crease to Asian eyes, it cannot remove crow's feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.
The eyelids are the first place to show aging.
The combination of a thin skin that moves thousands
of times a day and is exposed to sun and wind
results in their rapid aging.
This operation removes both the excess skin folds above and below the eyes and the bulging fat pouches under the eyes through incisions in the natural crease line, in the upper lid, and below the lash line, in the lower lid. These incisions soon fade and become faintly visible. If the lower lids have only bagginess without an excess of skin, the fat may be removed (and bagginess corrected) by using a totally hidden incision inside the lower lid (transconjunctival blepharoplasty).
After surgery, the surgeon will probably lubricate your eyes with ointment and may apply a bandage. Iced saline gauze will be placed over the eyes for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling and for comfort. Your eyelids may feel tight and sore as the anesthesia wears off, but you can control any discomfort with the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. Some may have double or blurred vision for a few days and temporary swelling at the corner of the eyelids with difficulty in closing eyes completely. Others may notice excessive tearing and sensitivity to light for the first few weeks. You may wear make-up once the sutures are removed (usually 3 - 5 days). Most patients are able to resume reading in 2 - 3 days and return to work in 7 - 10 days. Strenuous activities may be resumed in about 3 weeks.
Potential complications associated with this operation include formation of whiteheads (milia), infection, bleeding, pulling down of the lower lid (ectropion), dry eyes, or very rarely, blindness.
In rare cases, the operation may be covered by insurance if the upper lid skin excess partially blocks vision and this upper visual field compromise can be documented and accepted by the insurance company.
Blepharoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in their expectations.
